Madonna Rebel Heart Tour 2016 schedule news update: Concert Tamed in Singapore after Archbishop's Call for Boycott
Madonna's Rebel Heart Tour in Singapore was toned down after Christian leaders called on the faithful to boycott the pop icon's concert.
On Feb. 28, Madonna performed in front of the Singapore crowd, but the songs "Iconic," "Devil Pray," and "Holy Water" were omitted from her stage numbers. The change comes after the Media Development Authority (MDA) released a set of guidelines for the Queen of Pop, according to Channel News Asia.
Catholic Archbishop William Goh had encouraged Catholics to boycott the Rebel Heart tour, saying they must "support those who denigrate and insult religions." The Anglican Bishop of Singapore also released a letter on Friday calling on Christians to make choices that show their love for God. However, Reverend Rennis Ponniah said they were not forcing their views on non-believers, Straits Times reports.
On Sunday, the pop icon performed an edited version of the controversial segments of her concert. Aside from that, Madonna also modified her video introduction, taking out the cross accessories of the dancers. The rest of the numbers in the segment were performed as is.
MDA had announced that some of the pop singer's songs' religious content that go against their guidelines. Because of that, concert organizer Live Nation Lushington agreed with the guidelines and confirmed that Madonna would not include the banned segment in her performance.
Another change was seen in Madonna's encore song "Holiday," wherein the Singapore flag was replaced with another flag bearing the peace symbol. It can be remembered that the singer drew flak after using the Philippine flag in her Manila concert.
One of the highlights of the concert was Madonna's performance of "Craza For You," which has only been sung in Manila before the Singapore leg of the tour. She reportedly last sang the song live in 2004.
Despite the toned-down character of her Singapore concert, a topless flapper dancer was still seen during the "Candy Shop" song.
Almost 25,000 fans attended the two-hour Rebel Heart concert in Singapore, and Madonna sang a total of 18 songs to the crowd.
