Macbook Pro and Thunderbolt display 2016 news: Apple technologies that need an upgrade
With the upcoming March 21 Apple media event, more focus is placed on the anticipated features and specs of certain devices. However, there are aging Apple technologies that really need an upgrade, regardless if it will be released in March 21 or not.

MacBooks
Based on the current lineup, a MacBook is one of the Apple devices with the highest chance of having an upgrade released. A mid-year refresh is much needed for the MacBook, given that it is approaching the one year mark since it was last updated. However, 9 to 5 Mac speculates that it might not arrive in the upcoming media event.
Rumor has it that this will be a great year for Apple to do some house cleaning given the lineup it has for 2016. Once an ultra-thin 15-inch MacBook arrives, then the 11-inch MacBook can soon retire in result making the 12-inch MacBook its "best small-screen laptop."
Thunderbolt Display
Still with 2011 specs and a selling price of $999, Apple's Thunderbolt display is no-match for the current 4k and 5k displays seen in latest devices.
According to MacRumors, no concrete rumors point to a Thunderbolt Display happening soon, but certain upgrades can be done to make it keep up with the competitors right now. With Apple displays mostly similar with the iMac line, "a 27-inch Retina Thunderbolt display that offers four times as many pixels as the current Apple Thunderbolt Display" is highly probable to be developed. Even though a 4k display is possible, technology constraints hinder the chance of a 5K Retina Thunderbolt display. It might be developed through the use of Intel Cannonlake processors, which are due for release in 2017. Some of the speculated tweaks for the Thunderbolt Display include: a USB 3.0 or better, DisplayPort 1.3 for connectivity bandwidth, as well as a Retina resolution of 5120 x 2880 pixels matching the 27-inch Retina iMac.
