MacBook Air 2016 release date, specs news: Landing mid-June?

Despite not having a new release in Apple's "Let Us Loop You In" media event last week, a new MacBook Air is still expected to be launched this year.

A recent report from DigiTimes says that the tech giant will be shipping 13-inch and 15-inch ultra-thin MacBooks before the second quarter ends. This latest information led consumers to believe that the official announcement might probably be done in the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference which is usually held in June.

According to a report by MacRumors, MacBook Air variants are offered in two sizes only, the 11" and 13". A MacBook Air in 15" has never been released so if Apple is planning to unveil a MacBook Air, fans will be really surprised. To add, there was even a time when consumers assumed that the MacBook Air will be phased out as a result of declining sales in the market. If ever a new and improved MacBook Air surfaces, fans anticipate a Retina display.

As for the MacBook Pro, it fits the description the DigiTimes mentioned in its report better, but the ultra-thin body might be a big stretch for Apple. Given its pro-level hardware, an ultra-thin MacBook will be difficult to pull-off, however, the possibility cannot be discounted. The 13" and 15" might probably be MacBooks, but in order to prove that, Apple might have to discontinue its year-old 12" model.

Expected features in the upcoming Mac lineup include Thunderbolt 3, faster Skylake processors from Intel and USB-C. Of course, consumers will agree that the Macbook Air and MacBook Pro are in need of an overall upgrade as well.

Competitors of Apple might be gearing up for the upcoming ultra-thin MacBook, since it was also reported that Asustek Computer, Dell and Lenovo are among the other companies preparing to release their own ultra-thin notebooks as well. Adding to that speculation is Lenovo releasing its ThinkPad X1 Carbon. The device is 14 inches in size, 1.65-thin in width and weighs a very light 1.18 kg.
