'Luke Cage' season 1 premiere date, spoilers: Showrunner hints hip hop culture references, R&B musicians Raphael Saadiq and Faith Evans to guest star

Rookie superhero series "Luke Cage" is slated to premiere in September, and fans are already hyped up to see what the Marvel hero has to offer after his brief stint in the first season of "Jessica Jones."

Part of the preparations for the upcoming series required the cast and crew to live in the show's setting until filming wraps up. According to Luke's portrayer Mike Colter, uprooting his life and leaving his family behind to work is one of the challenges of doing the series. "We filmed in Harlem and we lived Harlem while we shot," Colter told Polygon. "We wanted it to feel as authentic as possible. And while that was great, it's a long time to be away from home."

During the Television Critics Association summer press tour, showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker mentioned how he makes sure that the series incorporates Hip Hop elements. He calls each episode "songs" and every episode is inspired by music from Gang Starr — an iconic rap duo with the late MC Guru and DJ Premier.

"It wasn't as much about bringing the world's together as it was talking about something that was already there," he explained. "Hip Hop fans are obsessed and they're geeks about Hip Hop. Comic book fans are also geeks, and when you can meld the two then you open the world up to I think communities that will just take to each other."

Coker also revealed that R&B singers Raphael Saadiq and Faith Evans will guest star in the series. Musicians Jidenna and Charles Bradley are also set to appear for yet-to-be-announced roles.

Set in the fictional New York nightclub called Paradise, "Luke Cage" follows the titular former convict/crimefighter with superhuman strength as he tries to save Harlem from itself.

"Luke Cage" season 1 will be released in its entirety on Friday, Sept. 30 on Netflix.
