'Luke Cage' season 1 air date, plot spoilers: Luke Cage's enemies revealed; Misty Knight to join 'The Defenders'

"Luke Cage" will be up against two menacing villains when Netflix's much-anticipated superhero series finally premieres this Friday.
Harlem crime boss Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes (Mahershala Ali) and his cousin, Mariah Dillard (Alfre Woodard) will become two of Luke Cage's (Mike Colter) enemies in the upcoming series. Mariah, a local politician on the rise, is well aware of Cottonmouth's criminal actions and tolerates them up to a certain point. However, the two are also often arguing with one another, and Luke's actions will have serious consequences for them.
Speaking with IGN, Woodard shared her thoughts on the interesting dynamic between the two villains. "That's how we learn how to be in the world, is by learning how to be with family, she said. "We learn how to love and how to fight in families. And how to create together, and so I think it paints a very realistic picture that a politician on the up and up has in their family a successful businessman who steps in and out of the gray areas."
On other related news, bulletproof superhero Luke Cage will not be the only character in the show to join Marvel's upcoming Netflix mini-series "The Defenders." Actress Simone Missick, who portrays the police officer Misty Knight in "Luke Cage," recently confirmed that she will also be appearing in next year's superhero mashup "The Defenders."
"I believe I'm safe to say that I will be on 'The Defenders,'" she told TheWrap. "Spoiler alert! If I lose my job because of this interview, sorry! I was supposed to be on 'The Defenders,' until I got fired," the actress added, jokingly.
In the comic books, Misty Knight is traditionally an NYPD detective who gains a bionic arm with the help of Tony Stark and opens her own detective agency. "Luke Cage" lead actor Mike Colter will be joining "The Defenders," with Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones and Finn Jones as Iron Fist. All cast members are reprising their roles from their respective solo programs in Netflix.
The first season of "Luke Cage" will be released in its entirety on Sept. 30 via Netflix.
