'Lucifer' season 2 release date, plot spoilers: 'The Sopranos' alum, 'Buffy' actress join cast; EP explains unlikely age gap between Lucifer, his mother

The upcoming sophomore season of "Lucifer" will introduce two more characters, making Lucifer Morningstar's (Tom Ellis) world will a bit bigger when the show returns next month.
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" alum Charisma Carpenter recently landed a guest role as Jamie Lee Adrienne, an attractive former Playmate. She was once married to an action star but now she is living her life alone. Aside from her sad tone, her mysterious character is certainly hiding something. It remains to be seen how she will cross paths with the titular character.
Carpenter first teased her new role through Twitter, posting a photo of a director's chair with the caption: "Raising a little hell myself. Nice to meet you @LuciferonFOX #Weaponizer S2 premieres Sept19." Her previous acting credits include "Angel," "The Lying Game" and "Scream Queens."
"The Sopranos" alum Michael Imperioli also joins the cast and he will portray an important character in Lucifer's life. His character's name is yet to be announced but he will be Lucifer (Tom Ellis) and Amenadiel's (DB Woodside) new brother.
The two actors join newcomers Aimee Garcia, who portrays a forensic expert and Tricia Helfer, who plays the role of Lucifer's mother Charlotte. During the Television Critics Association summer press tour, executive producer Ildy Modrovich explained why they tapped a young female actress to be Lucifer's mother. Helfer is only five years older than Ellis, making it an unlikely age gap between a mother and son.
"We were on a search for someone who could make her sons as uncomfortable as possible," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "I think we succeeded here." Co-executive producer Joe Henderson clarified that in the story, Charlotte came to Earth as a soul in search of a body. She went through a couple of different choices before she ended up with the physical body she has now.
Catch the season 2 premiere of "Lucifer" on Monday, Sept. 19 at 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
