'Longmire' season 6 renewed or cancelled, air date & plot news: Netflix gives 'Longmire' a sixth and final season
Netflix has given the green light to a sixth and final season for its contemporary crime thriller "Longmire."
"We are proud to be the home of the 'Longmire' series, as so many viewers over the last few seasons have watched and been captivated by Walt's journey," Cindy Holland, Netflix's vice president for original content, said in a statement.
Holland commended the work of executive producers Greer Shephard, Hunt Baldwin and John Coveny, adding, "[W]e have every confidence that they will have a satisfying conclusion to this revered series."
"We are grateful to Netflix for the opportunity to compose a closing chapter for these beloved characters that inspires lasting memories," the three said in a statement. "Most importantly, we're committed to delivering a dynamic and satisfying conclusion to our fans that rewards their longtime loyalty," they added.
This is the second time the Robert Taylor-starrer is coming to an end. Netflix picked up the crime drama in 2014 after it was cancelled by its original network, A&E, just days after its third season finale. While millions tuned in to "Longmire," A&E's most watched original series to date, the fact that it only attracted a certain demographic and that it was produced by the outside studio Warner Horizon may have led to its demise at the cabler.
Because "Longmire" season 3 ended with a massive cliffhanger, fans clamored for the show to continue and launched one of the largest save-the-show campaigns yet. Netflix acquired the series in November 2014 based on its strong appeal to a specific segment of the audience — a criterion that the streaming service has since used multiple times when ordering original series.
The "Longmire" season 6 renewal marks the doubling of the show's three-season original run on A&E. The new season, which will consist of 10 episodes, gives Shephard, Baldwin and Coveny the opportunity to neatly wrap up the neo-Western crime drama.
"Longmire" season 6 will premiere in 2017 in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
