Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has spoken out against 2016 presidential hopeful Donald Trump, calling the real estate mogul a "carnival act."

Jindal, who is also seeking the 2016 presidential ticket, made his strongly-worded comments while speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. recently.

"When asked, he couldn't even name a specific or a single Bible verse that was important to him, that had an impact on him," Jindal told the crowd.

"Well, do you know why? It's clear Donald Trump has never read the Bible. The reason we know he's never read the Bible? He's not in the Bible," added Jindal.

"Folks, Donald Trump is not a serious person. This is a carnival act. These are serious times for our country," Jindal continued.

"The Democrats have practically gift wrapped this election for us. The whole thing is set up for us to win, now we're flirting with nominating a non-serious, unstable, substantive-free candidate. We cannot send this narcissist, we cannot nominate this egomaniac," Jindal added.

Trump has received criticism after he was asked to name his favorite Bible verse, but declined to do so, arguing that his favorite Bible verse is something that is personal to him.

Other 2016 GOP presidential hopefuls, including retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, have also spoken out against Trump and questioned his religious faith.

Carson questioned Trump's faith at a recent convention in Orange County, California, saying: "By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life and that's a very big part of who I am. I don't get that impression with him."

"Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't get that," Carson added.
