Johnny Depp and Amber Heard news: Is their divorce damaging 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' box office sales?

The $170-million budget Disney film "Alice Through the Looking Glass" starring Johnny Depp is reportedly struggling in its box office performance after its May 27 release. The sequel's theatrical debut happened to be the same day when Depp's estranged wife Amber Heard accused him of domestic abuse and was granted a restraining order against the actor.
According to figures released as reported by Sky News, "Alice Through the Looking Glass" has raked only $28.1 million, a meager income relative to the film's budget, since its premiere in the North American cinemas.
Ahead of the "Alice Through the Looking Glass" release, its projected sales was at least $60 million on its first weekend. Thus, this makes the actual initial earnings of the sequel way behind the notable $116 million of its prequel "Alice in Wonderland" on the first weekend back in March 2010.
Unfortunately the showing of director Tim Burton's family-oriented motion picture just coincides with Depp's personal woes involving a messy high-profile divorce from Heard and also happens to be beleaguered with some negative reviews.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis expressed disappointment over the initial box-office failure of "Alice Through the Looking Glass," which is performing not in the way that the company hoped.
"Alice Through the Looking Glass" is not the first time Disney has invested in Depp. The company cast the actor in every film in its lucrative and stellar-performing "Pirates of the Caribbean" series and is slated to create a fifth installment with Depp reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow.
Depp has definitely seen his era of global popularity and proven to be one of the most profitable actors of today.
But the rather unpopular "Alice Through the Looking Glass" adds to the seeming heaps of ordeal Depp has been dealing with. Heard filed for divorce from the actor on May 23 just after a little over 15 months of marriage, and three days after his mother Betty Sue Palmer died.
