Fans of "Jessica Jones" may have to wait until 2018 to see their favorite heroine return to the small screen, but showrunner Melissa Rosenberg recently gave new details on the upcoming sophomore season.

Season 1 focused more on the introduction of Jessica and how her past defined her as a person. During an interview with IGN, Rosenberg said season 2 will explore the supporting character's backstories along with "some new characters that are only interesting in how they relate to our existing characters."The showrunner admits being excited to see each of their histories and where they're going as the series progresses.

Rosenberg also praised David Tennant's portrayal of last season's villain Kilgrave — stressing how they cannot recreate that again. "The objective is not to match that, not to try to do that again," she added.

Before season 2 begins production, Ritter's Jessica Jones is set to appear on the upcoming Netflix miniseries, "The Defenders" with other superheroes in the Marvel universe including Jessica's former lover Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones).

Colter's Luke first appeared in "Jessica Jones" season 1 when he shared a brief relationship with the titular heroine. He will also have a stand-alone series set to premiere next month, which follows him after moving to Harlem in an effort to pick up the pieces of his failed romance with Jessica. Will the two characters give their relationship another chance?

"My instincts tell me that he is not completely over her," Colter told Digital Spy during the TCA Press Tour. "But how do you continue a relationship with someone who's responsible for the death of your wife?"

For the uninitiated, Kilgrave manipulated Jessica to kill Luke's wife. He appeared to forgive Jessica but he was also under Kilgrave's control during that time. Since then, the two characters went their separate ways and never saw each other again. "When Luke is attacking Jessica, there are some things that he's saying that made sense. So was it him saying it? Was it all Kilgrave? We don't know," Colter continued.
