Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) and Michael Cordero (Brett Dier) finally tied the knot, but their love story might not have a happy ending at all after the closing moments of season 2 showed Sin Rostro (Bridget Regan) shooting Michael. In typical telenovela fashion, the cliffhanger of a finale seemed to imply that the bullet from Sin's gun struck him right in the heart.

As TVLine said, the narrator of the show could have given away Michael's fate as far back as the first season by insinuating that he would meet an early end. Now, fans are eager to find out if the seemingly ominous scene was an answer to a theory formulated in the beginning.

After all, there was a slew of last-minute obstacles on the day of Jane and Michael's wedding before they finally got to exchange "I dos," that not even a Bruno Mars cameo appearance could appease. Then, just when they were about to consummate their marriage, the shooting had to happen. Not everything that occurred seems to bode well for the pair.

However, in an interview with Deadline, the show's executive producer, Jennie Snyder Urman, weighed in on what was and what would happen in the upcoming season. She shared that viewers would know early on in the third season whether Michael is alive or not. When asked if a touching event in Jane's life, capped off with a dark twist, is to be expected of each season finale, Urman said:

"In all of our episodes, we try to balance heart-warming life events with the more fantastic, telenovela-esque twists. In a finale, you obviously want to pump everything up, so you see that pushed to the extreme. Next year's structure is a little bit different in that we are building towards a different type of life event, for Jane."

Urman also said that the main theme for "Jane the Virgin" season 3 would focus on "the idea of growing up – what it means, what it looks like, and what it costs."

Her response could be a confirmation of Movie News Guide's report that the series would be taking up some very serious issues in the upcoming season, particularly abortion and post-partum depression, which is what Petra (Yael Groblas) is undergoing after having given birth to twins.

"Jane the Virgin" season 3 would be back on The CW late 2016 or early 2017.
