'Jane the Virgin' season 3 spoilers, plot news: 'ER' alumna and 'Gossip Girl' actress join cast; Jane makes difficult choices in season premiere

Two new female characters will be joining the stellar cast lineup of The CW's hit dramedy "Jane the Virgin" season 3.
According to reports, "Six Feet Under" and "ER" alumna Justina Machado has been recently tapped by the show to portray the role of a professional matchmaker Darcy Factor. As woman who always wants to be in control, Darcy is very straightforward and has an all-business mindset. Rogelio meets with her to find a woman, but their first business transaction will not go as planned. Darcy strictly implements rules to protect her female clientele—all of which Rogelio breaks immediately. Darcy comes up with an unexpected proposition for Rogelio after giving him another chance.
Also joining the series is Kelly Rutherford, who will play as Jane's (Gina Rodriguez) new boss. Rutherford's character has yet to be named, but recent reports reveal that she is a high-profile publisher who will hire Jane to become her second assistant. The "Gossip Girl" actress' character will first appear in episode six of season 3 and although she is currently listed as guest star, Rutherford could potentially be promoted as a recurring cast member.
"Jane the Virgin" wrapped up its sophomore run with Jane finally marrying Michael (Brett Dier). Michael, however, was shot in the last moments of the finale, leading viewers to speculate if Rafael (Justin Baldoni) will swoop in to comfort a grieving Jane or a new man will be introduced in a flash-forward.
Set to premiere next week, season 3 picks up with Jane as she finally discovers that Michael was shot and will be forced to make tough decisions. While Rafael is focused on keeping Mateo safe, Anezka (Yael Grobglas) pretends to be Petra (also played by Grobglas) and "helps" with the investigation. It won't take long, however, before everyone realizes that Petra is acting odd.
The third season of "Jane the Virgin" premieres on Monday, October 17 at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
