Recent satellite images of Syria indicate that the Islamic State terror group has destroyed ancient tower tombs in the city of Palmyra.

The American Schools of Oriental Research confirmed this week that recent satellite images taken over Syria show that the ancient, historically-significant tower tombs of Palmyra have reportedly been destroyed in what they believe has been multiple stages.

"This confirmed rumors we had heard," Allison Cuneo, project manager for the group, said in a statement, adding "We think it happened in multiple stages."

This recent attack is the latest in an ongoing effort by the Islamic State to destroy Syria' heritage and rich ancient history.

Syria's antiquities director Maamoun Abdul Karim said in a statement on Friday that the tombs reportedly belonged to the ancient city's wealthiest inhabitants and were a true representative of the unique Palmyrian culture.

"The tombs were true representations of Palmyrian civilization, its economy and prosperity in the city," Abdulkarim said.

"Unfortunately Islamic State continues to destroy the ancient city, destroy and take revenge on a civilization," AbdulKarim said. "Their ideology does not allow them to accept Islamic mausoleums, Christian monasteries and churches, temples, idols, or tomb towers."

The Islamic State also detonated explosives at the famed Temple of Bel earlier this week, Abdulkarim previously told media outlets.

"We received reports 10 days ago but we've just confirmed the news," Mr Abdelkarim continued, adding "We obtained satellite images from the US-based Syrian Heritage Initiative, taken on September 2."
