Iron Man 4 Release Date News: Iron Man Back for Avengers 2 and 3, But Silence on Iron Man 4

So is Iron Man 4 finally in the works? Don't hold your breath because as of now there is no official word on the film. The last time there was any mention of a fourth installment was in Variety's interview with Robert Downey Jr. When asked about it, Robert Downey Jr. put an end to all speculation by stating that it was not being considered by Marvel. With the star of the hit film franchise clearly stating that the possibility of the movie was near zero, Iron Man fans went into total meltdown.

Since the interview to Variety, news has surfaced that Robert Downey Jr. is going to be bring Iron Man back to the screen in the next two Avengers films. The second one in the series is titled Avengers: Age of Ultron while the third one does not have a name yet. This news did assuage the feelings of Iron Man fans to an extent but some were left smarting.

So when Robert Downey Jr. stated to Deadline that he was open to doing another Iron Man movie, fans latched onto the news. However, if they had read the fine print they would have found a catch. Namely that Robert Downey Jr. wants Mel Gibson to direct the movie.

Robert Downey Jr. has long been a supporter of Mel Gibson and the E! reports that this was another statement in favor of him. E! goes on to report that Downey Jr. feels Gibson has "changed so much" and moved on from the troubles that he had in the past.

So while Downey Jr. might be supporting Gibson, it has almost nothing to do with the making of Iron Man 4. In fact Marvel would have shouted the news from the rooftops if Downey Jr. had signed on for the fourth film, and there are no signs of that happening.
