'Iron Man 4' plot news: Robert Downey Jr. wants Mel Gibson as director, Pepper's superhero alter ego 'Rescue' to finally be introduced?

Actor Robert Downey Jr. definitely made "Iron Man" fans excited after he expressed his interest in doing another standalone film for the iconic Marvel superhero. While filming for "Civil War," the actor admitted that the idea of an "Iron Man 4" happening seems great, but he is still unsure if the new movie is on the table. "In a way it's Cap 3 but for me it's like my little Iron Man 4 and then it's back to the thing we all recognize. Everything pulls over to the side of the road when the thunder of an Avengers thing comes through because that's how it is until it changes. If it changes," he told USA Today.

Reports say that there are some plot points in the "Iron Man" comic book series which fans would like to see on the big screen. One of those would be Pepper Potts finally donning the armored suit Tony made for her. Pepper's superhero alter ego is known as "Rescue," and her arc will be an interesting addition in the film.

As for the new installment's director, Downey Jr. seemed to have someone specific he'd like to work with. Director Shane Black recently caught up with Uproxx where he mentioned that the actor wants to work with Mel Gibson as the director for the film. "Mel was great to him," Black explained. "Mel's been really nice to a lot of people, including me. Mel's a great guy and I understand his new directing project is actually quite interesting... Yeah, one of these days, maybe Downey will do another one. I'd love to work with Robert again."

If "Iron Man 4" will indeed happen, fans might have to wait for a long time to see their favorite hero return for his solo film. As of the moment, the production company is working on various titles slated to premiere in the coming years, including "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and "Avengers: Infinity War."
