Tech fans waiting to get their hands on the latest iPhone 6 will have to read the fine print very carefully.

Apple announced on its website that the iPhone 6, the latest in its flagship line of smartphones, will cost either $199, $299 or $399. Experts, however, said the tech giant's price does not represent what customers will really have to pay for the device on contract.

The actual iPhone 6 price that a customer will pay for in the United States depends on the carrier he or she chooses. A shopper will most likely pay the up front advertised price -- $199, $299 or $399 — at the start of a new two-year contract, but those low numbers have hidden costs that will eventually raise the price in the long run.

Experts have said the $199 price tag is actually a down payment on an iPhone 6 with 16GB of storage, while shoppers will have to shell out from $300 for the 64GB model to as much as $400 for the 128GB handset.

After adding the device to the shopping cart, the customer will next select a monthly plan, agreeing to pay the price of the said plan for two years. What the shopper doesn't know is that the monthly prices for the contract plans, at least in the U.S. mobile market, are much higher than what he will shell out if he decides to pay the phone with the full retail price.

For instance, if the shopper wants to buy an iPhone 6 outright and without any contract, they will then have to pay either $650 for a 16GB model, $750 for a 64GB model and $850 for a 128GB model.

However, if they decide to go through a two-year contract, they will have to pay for a down payment plus some extra monthly charges thrown in.

The iPhone 6 contract prices in the U.S. vary. For AT&T, a two-year contract for a 16GB model will cost up to $800, while a 64GB model will cost up to $900 and a 128GB will cost as much as $1,000.

Sprint and Verizon subscribers will have to pay as much as $920 or $830, respectively, for an iPhone 6 16GB model to as much as $1,120 or $1,030, respectively, for a 128GB model.

T-Mobile, on the other hand, offers $660 two-year contract for a 16GB model; $760 contract for a 64GB model; and $860 contract for a 128GB model.
