Investigators have identified a well-known member of the Islamic State involved in multiple online beheading videos as a Londoner from a well-to-do family who traveled to Syria in 2012 to fight with the terrorist group.

Mohammed Emwazi, also dubbed "Jihadi John" due to his continued presence in multiple Islamic State beheading videos, reportedly hails from London, where he obtained a college degree in computer programming before traveling to Syria in 2012 to join the Islamic State.

Emwazi, who investigators have been trying to indentify since he began appearing in beheading vidoes, was reportedly tracked down using multiple recognition methods, including voice recognition and physical idiosyncrasies, including using his left hand when beheading hostages.

British government officials have yet to confirm or deny the report, with a spokeswoman for British Prime Minister David Cameron saying the British government does not "confirm or deny matters relating to intelligence."

"I am not going to get into the details of an ongoing police and security investigation," the spokeswoman added.

"We have said since we have seen the awful actions being taken by these terrorists that we are absolutely determined to bring the perpetrators to justice, and the police and the security agencies have been working hard to do that, continue to work hard to do that and that is what we want to see," she said.

The spokeswoman added: "Our prime minister has been clear that we want all those who have committed murder on behalf of ISIL to face justice for the appalling acts carried out. There is an ongoing police investigation into the murder of hostages by ISIL in Syria. It is not appropriate for the government to comment on any part of it while this continues."
