The upcoming second season of AMC's "Into the Badlands" will introduce a formidable new warrior when the hit martial arts drama returns next year.

"Shaun of the Dead" star Nick Frost recently landed a series regular role on the show and he will portray Bajie, Sunny's (Daniel Wu) disdainful and unlikely new ally. He is described as a man who is always on the lookout for the quick score and has questionable motives, according to Deadline.

Season 1 left off with Sunny and M.K. as they fought to be free from Quinn once and for all, while the Baron's foes conspired to end his reign and change the Badlands. The last moments of the finale featured M.K. being taken away by the monks while Sunny was captured by the River King, who is well aware that Sunny tried to trick him. It was also revealed that he plans to sell Sunny to the highest bidder. It remains to be seen if Frost's Bajie will save Sunny from being traded away.

To date, details about the second season remain under wraps. The series was renewed back in March and its 10-episode run will premiere on 2017. For the uninitiated, "Into the Badlands" is a martial arts drama series loosely based on the 16th-century Chinese novel "Journey to the West." Set in a post-apocalyptic America ruled by barons and free of guns, the story follows a ruthless warrior named Sunny (Wu) and a young boy named M.K. (Aramis Knight) as they embark on a journey towards enlightenment.

Supporting actors for the series include Marton Csokas ("The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King") as Quinn, Oliver Stark ("Luther") as Ryder, Emily Beecham ("28 Weeks Later) as The Widow, Orla Brady ("Dr. Who," "Fringe") as Lydia, Sarah Bolger ("Once Upon a Time," "The Tudors") as Jade, Ally Ioannides ("Parenthood") as Tilda and Madeleine Mantock ("Edge of Tomorrow") as Veil.

"Into the Badlands" season 2 is expected to premiere next year, but AMC has yet to announce an official launch date.
