Internal Investigation Finds Multiple Security Flaps In White House Fence Jumper Incident

A recent internal review on the White House jumper had indicated that there were nearly one dozen security lapses that enabled Omar Jose Gonzalez to enter the East Room of the White House back in September.

An internal investigation conducted by the Department of Homeland Security found that the Secret Service failed on nearly a dozen safety precautions, allowing war veteran Gonzalez to climb the north fence of the White House and successfully enter the White House and run all the way to the East Room. Gonzalez was reportedly carrying a small knife in his pocket, and claimed to have been trying to warn President Obama that the earth's atmosphere was collapsing.

The Washington Post, which obtained the internal review, found that of the security missteps of the Secret Service, one included the failure of the attack dog handler to dispatch his canine on Gonzalez. Rather, the attack dog handler was reportedly in his van, making a personal phone call when Gonzalez jumped the fence.

Another incident involved a White House security guard's radio failing to work properly, and therefore he thought he was dispatching an alert regarding Gonzalez when in reality, no other Secret Service members could hear it.

The embarrassingly public security breach involving Gonzalez forced the resignation of Secret Service director Julia Pierson, who said that such a public gaffe meant "Congress has lost confidence in my ability to run the agency."

Pierson added in an interview with Bloomberg News back in September that after meeting with the Homeland Security Secretary, she felt it was the "the noble thing to do" to resign from her post.
