'Insidious: Chapter 4' release date, plot news 2016: First teaser photo shows Elise heading back to 'The Further'

Universal Pictures has recently released the first photo from "Insidious: Chapter 4," the much-awaited sequel to "Insidious: Chapter 3" and the newest installment of the "Insidious" horror film franchise.
The photo was shared by director Adam Robitel on Instagram and was debuted by Entertainment Weekly on their official website. The photo features returning "Insidious" franchise star Lin Shaye as Elise Rainier and franchise newcomer Tessa Ferrer as Aubrey. Based on the photo, it appears that Elise and Aubrey are in the mysterious ethereal place known as "The Further."
In an interview with Daily Dead early this December, Shaye revealed some intriguing details about the upcoming return of parapsychologist Elise Rainier in the fourth installment of "Insidious."
"The film goes back to Elise's beginnings. And you also meet Elise at a very different point in her life," Shaye revealed during the interview. "It takes place right after the end of Chapter 3, when she walks off with Specs and Tucker and they're starting their company, Spectral Sightings, and they are now living at her home. They're like her two sons, her two bad sons," she went on to say.
"So it starts out in a very jovial, happy place and then goes downhill from there. And downhill meaning uphill, though. It's a fantastic story and it took me back into what made Elise who she is," Shaye said.
"Insidious: Chapter 3" was a prequel to the first two installments in the franchise, in which psychic Elise Rainier used her abilities to help a teenage girl who had been haunted by a supernatural presence. With a $10 million budget, it earned $52.2. million domestically and $112.9 million worldwide.
The first "Insidious" earned $54 million domestically and $97 million worldwide against a $1.5 million budget. Its sequel "Insidious: Chapter 2" earned $83.5 million domestically and $161.9 million worldwide against a budget of $5 million.
"Insidious: Chapter 4" is set to hit theaters next year on Oct. 20, 2017.
