'Injustice 2' release date and rumors: Characters from 'Watchmen' said to appear

Still from Zack Snyder\'s 2009 live-action adaptation of Alan Moore\'s \"Watchmen\" | Warner Bros. Pictures

Alan Moore's "Watchmen" is one of the most celebrated graphic novels of all time, and as of now, all the characters in the comic have officially been included in the DC Universe. Creative director for NetherRealm Studios Ed Boon has been updating fans on the upcoming game, "Injustice 2," and he just put up a poll on whether fans would like to see "Watchmen" characters appear in the game.

After 20, 056 votes on Twitter, the fans voted that they definitely want to see "Watchmen" make a crossover to "Injustice." The numbers weren't even close, with 76 percent voting "yes" and only 26 percent voting "no." The characters haven't been confirmed by the studio, but at least fans have an idea of what's in store for the game.

Though "Watchmen" characters don't usually appear in video games, the franchise got its own title back in 2009 called "Watchmen: The End is Night." It was an action game with a fighting mechanic almost similar to that of "Arkham Asylum," and gamers had the option to either use Rorschach or Nite Owl. The game wasn't met with the best reviews, but the franchise definitely has its share of fans.

Though "Watchmen" is not really known for its action, a lot of the characters seem to fit very well into a fighting game roster. Aside from Nite Owl and Rorschach, there are also characters like Silk Spectre, The Comedian, and Ozymandias; not to mention the god-like character Dr. Manhattan.

Aside from the Watchmen, Boon also teased earlier this month other comic characters coming to the game like Hellboy and Spawn. Buffy from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" also made the list, and a bunch of characters from NetherRealm's other successful franchise, "Mortal Kombat," have also been teased.

No official release date has been announced for "Injustice 2," but fans guess that it could come out in early 2017.
