Hunger Games Theater Play Release Date, Latest News: Theater Being Built For Hunger Games Play In London

Taking full advantage of the rising popularity of the Hunger Games film franchise and books, Lionsgate has announced its plan to develop a play based on the book and movie.

In a press statement, the studio revealed that a play version of the franchise is in the works. Lionsgate said the play will debut sometime during the summer of 2016. The long delay before the play's debut is due to the fact that a custom-built theater is being created for it near Wembley Stadium, London.

While the construction of a "special" theater for the play is unusual, it does mean that the play could be presented to the audience in a unique format. Another clue that points to a specialized format is Lionsgate's recruitment of Robin de Levita to produce it.

Levita produced "Soldier of Orange," a Dutch musical which has been extremely successful. Importantly, that play allowed the audience to sit right around the set which was placed in the center. The auditorium then rotates around the various sets on stage allowing for a seamless transition from one act to another. This signals the theater in Wembley could feature the same design or one where the sets rotate as in the "Diary of Anne Frank" which debuted this May in Amsterdam.

Lionsgate noted that "Levita and his production team have world-class production values and use state-of-the-art technology to provide a uniquely immersive experience for theater goers."

This could mean fans of the films and books will have to travel to London to see the play. While this is not as convenient as watching a Hunger Games film in the closest theater, it is guaranteed to make more money for Lionsgate. As for the rest who can't make it to London, Lionsgate has announced that they will also be creating a travelling exhibit.
