"Humans" is expected to introduce new characters and villains when it returns next year for its sophomore season.

Season 2 of the hit British sci-fi drama will reportedly pick up a few months after the surprising twists in the season 1 finale. The robotic Synths have already made their way into the human's culture and they are no longer considered as a novelty.

"[The Synths have] gone a bit deeper," writer Sam Vincent told TV Line. "They've moved into new areas of employment. They've moved into new areas of our personal lives. Things are developing fast, as technology does in all areas. There's lots of new, society-wide effects which we're going to tell stories in." Vincent also teased a "new antagonistic force" entering the picture for season 2, but details on the new Big Bad is still under wraps.

Co-creator Jonathan Brackley  confirmed that majority of the original cast members will reprise their respective roles. Katherine Parkinson, Tom Goodman-Hill, Lucy Carless, Theo Stevenson and Pixie Davies will all be back as the Hawkins family while the Synths will still be made up of Gemma Chan, Colin Morgan, Emily Berrington, Ruth Bradley, Sope Dirisu, Ivanno Jeremiah and Will Tudor. William Hurt will no longer be in the series after his character died in the finale of season 1.

"Nashville" actor Sam Palladio will also be on board as a café owner named Ed. In an interview with Digital Spy back in June, the actor mentioned that he will share most of his scenes with Mia (Chan). As fans can recall, the female Synth's consciousness was restored in the previous season. "The story takes her down a very interesting path – needless to say it's quite an intense partnership for the two of them," Palladio hinted.

The second season of "Humans" is expected to air early 2017 on AMC and late autumn in Channel 4.
