AMC's rookie science fiction drama has officially been renewed for a second season, which means fans will get to see more of the Synths as they continue to interact with humans.

Season 2 picks up several months following the unexpected events in the season 1 finale. Niska remains at large, with the consciousness code still in her possession. Unaware of where Niska is, members of her synth family must find their place in the world while Laura and Joe make an effort to fix their relationship. Reports about synths behaving inexplicably spread fast and one decision will see the past return surprisingly to the Hawkins household. Laura, Joe and the rest of the family are forced to deal with a difficult decision which puts them under a spotlight.

Two newcomers will be on board for the show's sophomore season: "Jessica Jones" star Carrie Anne-Moss and Sam Palladio from "Nashville." According to TV Line, Moss will portray a series-regular character named Dr. Athena Morrow who is "a pre-eminent Artificial Intelligence expert who is driven by her own motives to create a new kind of machine consciousness." Meanwhile, Palladio landed the recurring role of Ed who is described as "a struggling café owner trying to breathe life into his family business."

Executive producer Sam Vincent mentioned that the synths will have a bigger role in the story as they explore new areas of employment. "We're going to the next level... They've gone a bit deeper," he hinted. "They've moved into new areas of employment. They've moved into new areas of our personal lives... You're not coming back to a status-quo society. Things are developing fast, as technology does in all areas. There're lots of new, society-wide effects which we're going to tell stories in."

"Humans" season 2 will have eight episodes and the series is scheduled to premiere in the UK later this year and early 2017 in the U.S.
