'How to Get Away with Murder' season 3 news: Major character death was showrunner's 'hardest decision' for series yet

The "How to Get Away with Murder" season 3 premiere left viewers with the stunning revelation that one of the show's main characters will die by the end of the season.
The season opener, which picked up right after the events in the season 2 finale, found the students retuning to school and participating in Annalise's (Viola Davis) new pro-bono legal clinic. This gave them the chance to practice actual court cases.
Things took an interesting turn when a mysterious individual began spreading posters of Annalise's face with the word "killer" on it. On top of that, a two-month fast-forward found the high-profile law professor coming home to a dead body being taken from her house, which was engulfed in flames. The look on Annalise's face as she gazed upon the victim showed viewers that the person was someone important to her.
"Over our hiatus I was thinking that we needed to make a big impact in our new season," "How to Get Away with Murder" showrunner Pete Nowalk told The Hollywood Reporter.
Explaining the decision to have one of the show's mainstays die in season 3, Nowalk said, "I always just want to surprise myself and find the thing that's best for the show, but it was a very hard decision. It was the hardest decision I've had to make in the history of the show."
While the show's exec wouldn't reveal which character the show will kill off this season, he confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that it is someone "pivotal" to the drama.
He also shared how the mystery will unfold over the course of season 3, telling the outlet, "Every episode, we will reveal one more character on the night of the house fire that's alive."
According to Nowalk, this will allow viewers at home to cross their favorite characters off the kill list one at a time and narrow down the possible casualties until they get to the season 3 finale.
Nowalk also teased the upcoming return of Famke Janssen's Eve, telling The Hollywood Reporter, "Eve and Annalise fans should definitely watch that."
"How to Get Away with Murder" season 3 airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. EDT on ABC.
