'House of Cards' season 5 release date, spoilers: Creator hints spin-off show; Frank to die next season?
Netflix's critically-acclaimed original series, "House of Cards" will not return until next year, leaving fans wondering about Frank Underwood's fate when his wife Claire decides to have her power back.
Details about the plot are still under wraps, but there are speculations that the upcoming season will see Frank's end. Fans began to doubt if the show will continue beyond season 5 when showrunner Beau Willimon left, but it seems that his departure will also mark the protagonist's demise.
Users from Reddit came up with theories suggesting that Frank's death will likely happen due to a number of reasons. Aside from his worsening medical condition, Frank is also facing marital issues with Claire which can make matters worse. It may be a depressing thought for most viewers who are used to seeing the anti-hero they love to hate, but series creator Michael Dobbs recently discussed the possibility of continuing the story even without the lead character.
"That is a very interesting question and one that we are putting our minds to actively because every show comes to a natural end," Dobbs told Express. "Look what they've done with Breaking Bad, look what they've done with 24. So is there life in the long term? Well, it's a hell of a brand. It's been going now for 30 years: it was a success as a book, it was a success as a BBC television series, it is a huge success as a US series."
Dobbs also shared their plans on having a spin-off series, but negotiations are still ongoing."There are plenty of people from other parts of the world who want to make their version of House of Cards, which we're talking with," he continued. "We'll see what happens with those. It is a global brand, so the question arises: what do we do with a global brand?"
"House of Cards" season 5 is expected to premiere in the first half of 2017.
