"Homeland" wrapped up its fifth season last October, but unfortunately for fans, it might be a while before the hit political thriller returns to the small screen.

The show will not be returning this winter season as noted by The Independent, but the good news is that the Emmy-winning series has been renewed for two more seasons. Season 6 picks up on the events after the climax of the fifth season. The plot will tackle the aftermath of the U.S. presidential elections, with Carrie back in her home country. She will be living in Brooklyn, New York, working at a foundation aiming to provide help to Muslims residing in the United States. A press release from the network describes the forthcoming season to take place in "a strange, transitional time in the halls of government filled with anxiety and different competing interests, where a very fragile and complex transfer of power takes place between the outgoing president and the incoming president-elect."

Star Claire Danes attended an event in New York last Tuesday for the Showtime series, and she talked about how the upcoming season will play out. The actress explained that the story will be centered around a female presidential nominee and her victory. However, Danes clarified that the first female president-elect in the show is not solely based on Hillary Clinton, but is "kind of a composite of all of the different candidates and a kind of — not rebellious necessarily — but she's challenging norms and is a little threatening for that reason." She also hinted that the character "gets along with Carrie Mathison pretty well."

Now that the show has been renewed up to season 8, Showtime CEO David Nevin stressed that it will not be the final season. "Just because I'm not thinking that far ahead doesn't mean Alex Gansa and his team aren't," he told Slash Film. "It's changing itself pretty dramatically each season. I think more than most, this show has an open-ended expiration date. That said, I've been focused on getting this deal done and not really asking what happens beyond this deal."
