Hollywood Film Awards 2014 News: Telecast Gets Less Than Stellar Ratings

Last week's telecast of the 18th Annual Hollywood Film Awards on CBS ended up getting less than stellar rating from the coveted 18-49 year demographic. But still the show managed to attract about 3.7 viewers which put it just behind other major networks.
The awards had been billed as the "official launch of the awards season."
On Twitter, however, the Hollywood Film Awards trended when the awards were being presented. But this had more to do with Johnny Depp's incoherent speech.
Deadline notes that Depp sounded as though he was playing the part of an "inebriated roaster." Many other news outlets caught onto Depp's speech. Other A-listers who turned up in the show were Ben Affleck, Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Angelina Jolie, Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Before the show started, many news sources had already been criticizing the awards based on how they were being handed out. Some described the awards as "dubious" as the jury often gave awards to films that, at the time of their nomination, still had not finished production yet. One major example cited was Quentin Tarantino who receivede a screenplay award for "Django Unchained" when the movie, at the time it was nominated, was still being edited and hadn't been released yet.
Some critics even pointed out that in previous years, stars who turned up to receive the awards usually arrived through the back door. After they picked up the awards, they quietly left.
This year, the Hollywood Film Awards got a major boost when CBS decided to telecast it live.
In spite of the live telecast, the event wasn't able to shake off its reputation as a badly judged awards show.
