'Harry Potter GO' release date news 2016: Rumors debunked; 'Harry Potter Go' not happening soon

The success of Niantic's mobile game "Pokemon Go" is no secret. With its massive popularity, recent rumors suggested that the video game creator is developing another upcoming hit, a game for J.K. Rowling's popular series "Harry Potter."
Niantic might be able to create an augmented-reality game for Rowling's franchise. However, there have been no announcements to confirm that the video game developers are creating one for Potterheads.
The rumors started in July when news of Niantic purchasing the rights to create the game circulated around the internet. JTXH News reported that Niantic senior developer Marcus Figueroa went on an interview with IGN and revealed the details. IGN reportedly said the game was slated to launch in 2017.
"We have acquired the rights for the app. The demand for this title was absolutely insane, so we figured we'd give it a shot. If we're lucky we might see a launch by early 2017, but it's hard to tell this early in the project," Marcos Figueroa.
In the interview, Figueroa reportedly mentioned that "Harry Potter Go" will contain a quest system, schools of witchcraft and wizardry and interactive events.
However, more credible news outlets have delved into the matter and have found out that the news reported by JTXH was fake. According to Gizmodo, the link that supposedly redirected readers to the original IGN interview only led to a page error. The report pointed out that JTXH was a fake news site that generated rumors and bogus articles for clicks.
Although the ideas behind the JTXH report were indeed enticing, fans shouldn't get their hopes up for a game that is not bound to launch anytime soon. Hopefully, someday brilliant video game developers will make the "Harry Potter" experience more magical than it already is. But for now, fans can indulge in J.K. Rowling's official game "Pottermore."
