'GTA 6' release date news update: 'GTA Online' success cause for 'GTA 6' delay? New installment reportedly years away from launch

The lack of official announcements regarding the long-awaited sixth installment of the popular action-adventure game series "Grand Theft Auto" (GTA) has left many fans wondering if "GTA 6" will be released at all.

It has been three years since the previous installment, "Grand Theft Auto V," was released, and it appears that Rockstar Games, the series' publisher, is intent on keeping the potential new installment under wraps for years to come.

According to the latest "GTA 6" rumors, the success of "GTA Online," the online multiplayer video game Rockstar released in 2013, is partly the reason why "GTA 6" has been languishing in the development stage all these years.

A report by N4BB claims that Rockstar is making "hundreds of millions of dollars" from "GTA Online" microtransactions. The outlet states that the revenue from "GTA Online" has exceeded the company's expected earnings from the game and that, for this reason, they have not felt the need to fast-track work on the hotly anticipated "GTA 6."

Nevertheless, other reports suggest that "GTA 6" is in the works and that it could hit store shelves sometime between 2018 and 2020.

According to Neurogadget, Rockstar could drop "GTA 6" in 2018, following the pattern it established early in the series. As the outlet notes, "Grand Theft Auto IV" was released in 2008 and was followed five years later by "Grand Theft Auto V" in 2013. Adding another five years to that would mean that "Grand Theft Auto VI" could be scheduled for a 2018 release.

Alternatively, the game could be released in 2020 after Sony drops the new PlayStation and Microsoft launches the new Xbox. As Neurogadget notes, there are rumors that "Grand Theft Auto VI" will be the first game released for both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Two.

With the rumored release date for "GTA 6" so far away, it doesn't seem likely that gamers will be hearing anything from Rockstar about the new installment anytime soon.

In the meantime, the video game publisher recently announced that a new "GTA Online" DLC pack called "Further Adventures in Finance and Felony" will be released on Tuesday, June 7.

No official word has been released about the rumored "Grand Theft Auto VI."
