ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" season 13 premiered on Thursday, Sept. 22. After months of waiting and speculating about Alex Karev's (Justin Chambers) fate this season, fans finally got their answer.

In the previous season, viewers saw why Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) couldn't marry Karev. After drowning her sorrows in alcohol, she warmed up to surgical intern Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) as he went by the apartment.

The intoxicated Wilson revealed everything about her past. She told DeLuca that she got married when she was homeless. The relationship, however, didn't last because her partner became abusive.

When Karev returned to the apartment, he thought the surgical intern was taking advantage of his girlfriend. The pediatric surgeon immediately sprang into action, pummeling DeLuca's face. Barely surviving the incident, the intern was rushed to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Furthermore, his colleagues were fixed on finding out the assailant.

Karev's best friend, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), instantly figured out what was going on. His bruised knuckles also made the rest of the surgeons suspicious.

"You think no one's gonna realize this is you?!" Grey told Karev. "This is assault. I'm a doctor — I have a duty to report you to Bailey," she added.

Grey eventually told her sister, Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), that it was Karev who assaulted DeLuca. Before they could tell anyone else, viewers saw Karev turning himself in. Towards the end of the episode, Grey visited him in prison.

When asked about the repercussions about Karev's actions, Chambers said, "I don't know how that affects his medical license. I don't know, but he's... got to find redemption."

Furthermore the actor talked about his character's guilt, saying, "Right now, he's just trying to pick up the pieces and try to glue it back together."

As for Karev and Jo's relationship, the actor revealed that Karev will be very hurt and angry when he finds out the truth about Jo. However, there still is a possibility that the couple will work through this. He said, "Hope? On this show, anything's possible. Anything."

The 13th season of "Grey's Anatomy" airs on Thursdays at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
