'Grey's Anatomy' season 13 spoilers, return date: Kevin McKidd discusses theme in upcoming episodes; can Owen and Amelia sort things out?
After an emotionally charged fall finale, ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" season 13 will return next year with more revelations about the doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
The first half of season 13 left off with a major disaster hitting the hospital. An apartment in Seattle collapsed and the hospital was flooded with critically injured patients, along with their worried loved ones. The doctors also had to deal with bigger disasters in their personal lives, including Richard Webber's (James Pickens Jr.) job remained at risk. One of the important highlights of the finale was when Owen (Kevin McKidd) came home to patch things up with Amelia (Caterina Scorsone), only to find out that she ran away and left a note telling him not to come after her.
Speaking with Variety, McKidd teased the major theme of the upcoming batch of episodes. "For Richard's position to be put into question is a seismic thing to happen in our show because he's always been our rock and the moral compass," he said. "To put his integrity or ethics in question like this is huge for the show and big for our doctors. It creates an existential anxiety for everyone that I think will play out very interesting and in very divided ways."
As for Owen's relationship with Amelia, McKidd revealed that his character will try to find Amelia despite what she told him. Many fans hope the two characters will get back together, but McKidd admits that he doesn't know if that will happen anytime soon. According to him, they are still shooting the scenes where Owen is searching for Amelia.
"I really, really don't know. I hope they reconcile, because I love working with Caterina," he told TV Guide. "But what I've learned on our show is that, usually when the couples break up they actually end up working more together in a strange way, because there's more stuff to deal with. So, I don't know so far where it's headed, but it's going to be exciting to see what happens with them."
"Grey's Anatomy" season 13 returns on Thursday, January 19 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
