'Grey's Anatomy' season 13 plot news, spoilers: Jackson and April to get a second chance at love?

Renewed love may be in the air for divorced couple April Kepner (Sarah Drew) and Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) when "Grey's Anatomy" returns for its 13th season.
Executive producer Shonda Rhimes gave new hope to the fans of the couple when she told Entertainment Weekly that Jackson and April's season 13 storyline will explore being divorced and co-parenting a child "in a much lighter way" compared to the heavy drama that was usually attributed to their on-and-off relationship. Rhimes added that the couple will try to do this as healthily as they possibly can while dealing with their lingering feelings for each other.
According to Cinema Blend, this will be a new take on the Jackson–April dynamic that fans may actually enjoy. Previous seasons of the long-running medical drama have seen every stage of Jackson and April's romance cycle: hooking up, breaking up, and making up. But things may be different now since they have a baby together, born via an emergency C-section at Meredith Grey's (Ellen Pompeo) house in the previous season's finale.
Cinema Blend also speculates that the lighter treatment of the Jackson–April arc could be attributed to "Grey's Anatomy's" plans of focusing much of its storytelling in season 13 on the four remaining core characters of the show, including Meredith, Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), and Richard Webber (James Pickens, Jr.).
Kelly McCreary, who plays Maggie Pierce, Meredith's half-sister, shared via TV Guide that the new season will update viewers about how the lives of these four characters have changed, where they are, and how far they have gone in all of the thirteen years that they've been around. There are no confirmed reports about former characters returning yet, but fans are still hoping for Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) or Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) to come back.
Meanwhile, pediatric doctor Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) is also due for a new love interest, according to another report by EW. Rhimes said that Arizona's upcoming romantic arc will be handled in a slow, organic way that will give the relationship time to build up into something that viewers can really root for.
"Grey's Anatomy" season 13 kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
