After season 5's finale, "Girls" is confirmed to have a sixth season, which will also be its last. The hit comedy from HBO launched Lena Dunham's career, and it's safe to say she's on board with the network's decision to end the long-running series. "Never say never, but that is the way that we're thinking about it right now, and we're starting to think about sort of how to wrap up the storylines of these particular young women," Dunham previously told Elvis Duran on z100.

Dunham has matured in the series, and she mentioned that it would not make perfect sense if the show pushes through any longer. "Also, it is about this really incredible specific period in these women's lives. Just on a personal level, I was 23 when I wrote the pilot; I'm gonna be 30 as we shoot the sixth season. And it just felt as though, if we were to continue on, it wouldn't be about what it was originally about. It would be the equivalent of moving them to California, only California is them getting married and having kids and stuff like that. It just feels like at this point, it makes sense for us to wrap their stories up," she explained in a report by The Hollywood Reporter.

As noted by Bustle, it is quite difficult to say this early if the girls will have their own happy ending in season 6. Based on season 5, the fate of Hannah, Jessa, Marnie, and Shoshanna seems slightly "bleak," since they are still facing the same struggles most 20-somethings do. The media outlet also noted that the final season is hard to predict because there is a lot more room for the characters to take a different direction.

HBO has yet to announce a conclusive release date for "Girls," but the sixth and final season is expected to premiere early 2017.
