'Girls' season 6 news, final season update 2016: Lena Dunham, Allison Williams prepare to say goodbye to HBO series
"Girls" co-stars Lena Dunham and Allison Williams recently took to Instagram to announce that the HBO comedy/drama about a quartet of 20-something New York-based women is on its last leg of filming the show's sixth and final season.

Dunham, who stars in and created "Girls" (as well as serving as one of the show's directors, writers, and executive producers), posted an Instagram snap of herself on the show's set as she prepares to bid the dramedy farewell.
"Today on set I said the words 'I've got my fake nipples on and I'm ready to party!' Gonna miss this job..." Dunham captioned the photo. The actress used the hashtags #goodbyegirls #endofGIRLS and #seriesfinale.
Later, Williams also shared an Instagram photo of herself and Dunham dancing in an episode of "Girls." "#TBT. Feeling very sentimental - 2 weeks left of shooting with this one," the actress captioned the snap. "I don't want to go back to dancing on my own. Dancing with you is way more fun, @lenadunham," the post read.
In January, HBO announced that the series will end with its sixth season. Shortly after the announcement, Dunham addressed the show's impending conclusion during a Cinema Cafe discussion with Norman Lear at the Sundance Film Festival.
"We were always conscious, especially because the show has been at times such a lightning rod, of overstaying our welcome," Dunham said, explaining why the series has to end with season 6.
"We wanted to make sure we kept the momentum alive and didn't allow it to soften over time," she added.
Prior to HBO's announcement, Dunham had stated that she intends for "Girls" to wrap up after six seasons so as not to push it past its shelf life. At Sundance, she explained that the show is about an "incredibly specific" time in the lives of its main characters and that taking it further than that would drastically alter what it is about.
"Girls" season 6 will air on HBO in winter 2017.
