The fate of hit family sitcom "Girl Meets World" remains up in the air, and fans will have to wait until later this year to know the network's final decision. Rumor has it that the show will no longer have a place in the Disney Channel anymore due to its maturing themes.

The show's future may be unclear for now but if one thing is for certain, "Girl Meets World"—just like its teenage cast of characters—is growing up. The series began with a group of kids in middle school as they learned the true meaning of friendship, experienced their first crushes and explored more of their interests while still in school. Now that Riley Matthews (Rowan Blanchard) and her friends have moved on to the big world of high school, things will clearly be more different.

Since the program will explore more mature content next season, Zap2it speculates that "Girl Meets World" gets picked up by Freeform which caters to more matured audience. There was even an online petition which gathered almost 50,000 signatures from fans who believe that the show should find a new home network.

Formerly known as ABC Family, Freeform is also a part of the Disney family. The network's target audience includes those between the ages of 14-34, theoretically picking up where Disney Channel leaves off.

In a recent interview, Blanchard confirmed that even the cast members are not yet aware of the program's future. However, the 14-year-old hopes Disney Channel will let them share more stories to their avid viewers. "I know as much as you do," she said. "We are hoping for a season four, obviously, because we want to continue our story, and I feel like it's an important story to tell. But as of right now, we just finished [filming] season three and we're still waiting on the word. But we do have more episodes coming out this year that air into early 2017, so we're covered for a little bit."

Disney Channel has yet to renew "Girl Meets World" for a fourth season.
