New reports have emerged that Epic Games has started the production of "Gears of War 4" for a long time now. The development continued for six months before the company decided to move on and sell the franchise to Microsoft.

Game developer The Coalition made a decision to incorporate the version created by Epic Games with their own technology before releasing it to the market. Fans certainly welcome the news with hopes that the highly anticipated fourth installment of the critically acclaimed video game series will finally come out this year.

Ex-Epic Games producer Rod Fergusson, who is now heading a team for further development of the game with The Coalition, said that their plan is to continue with what they have already started and add exciting changes to the game for the newer audience. The team also likes the idea of adding Marcus' son, JD, as the new protagonist.

"When I was at Epic, we had started some Gears 4 planning," Fergusson told Game Informer. When I got here, we realized really fast that with all these new perspectives on the series it was going to take a long time to do preproduction on the game, so I said, 'Why don't we tap into some of the work I was doing at Epic when I was working on Gears 4 there?' We went back in and looked at what the team had done after I left, and it was not really in a place that I was happy with, so we actually rewound it to a point before I left."

Fergusson also cites a reason why Epic Games had to sell the franchise to The Coalition. He said that the company decided to focus more on mobile and PC games and they could no longer find time to continue with the project.

The third sequel of the franchise is expected to be released late 2016 on Xbox One console.
