Gear S vs Apple Watch Comparison: Review of Specs and Features - War In the Wearable Tech Market

YouTube

Apple is ready to challenge Samsung for a slice of the wearable tech market, but which device will win over the market; the Apple Watch or the Samsung Gear S?

The Gear S is due to be launched in October 2014 by Samsung while the Apple Watch won't be available until the early part of 2015.

Looking at the basic specs of the watches, one stand out feature for the Gear S is that it is water resistant and has plastic watch straps that are either white or black. For those who do not prefer plastic watch straps, Samsung also has a Swarvoski strap and a Black Gold strap that has been created in collaboration with fashion designer Diesel.

As for the Apple Watch, it will come in two sizes and in a variety of styles which are targeted at both men and women.

The screen size of the Apple Watch and the Gear S is where the main difference lies, and the screen on the Gear S is about 45-59 percent larger than the Apple Watch. This makes the Gear S more like a smartphone while the smaller Apple Watch will appeal more to the fashion conscious. The Gear S also has a futuristic curved rectangular screen which is fun to use. It is also described by Gizmag to be more "powerful and versatile" than the screen on the Gear Fit.

Coming to display the Apple Watch will feature Retina Display, and pressure sensitivity and will therefore be able to differentiate between a light tap and a firmer press on the screen. The Gear S on the other hand has a 480X 360 display which allows for 300 pixels per inch on the screen.

Both the Gear S and the Apple Watch feature voice control. However, Apple is adding a feature called "Digital Crown" winder which will help users adjust the time without manipulating anything on the screen.
