In the upcoming fifth season of "Game of Thrones," new characters are set to emerge even as some of those who were not included in the last season could make their comeback.

Season 5 premieres on Sunday, April 12, on HBO with Episode 1 titled "The Wars to Come."

The show is expected to revisit plotlines skipped in the last season.

One major character not included in the fourth season, which irritated some book readers, was Lady Stoneheart aka Catelyn Stark, played by Michelle Fairley. It remains uncertain whether she will return.

Soon after the Red Wedding took place in the ninth episode of Season 3, Fairley said she had no plans to return to the show as the resurrected Lady Stoneheart. However, fans with knowledge of the books had assumed that she would make an appearance in the last episode of the fourth season.

When that didn't happen, the fans turned their attention to the fifth season, hoping that the show runners would include the character as they revisit plotlines they skipped. If Fairley does return as Lady Stoneheart, it is likely that she will encounter Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) and Podrick (Daniel Portman) just like in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" books that inspire the TV series.

As for the new characters, some will be connected with Dorne which is ruled by the Martell family. They will include Trystane Martell (Toby Sebastian) who is betrothed to Myrcella Baratheon (Nell Tiger Free) and appears to be in love with her.

Dorne is also where three illegitimate "bastard" daughters of Oberyn (Pedro Pascal) will make an appearance as they seek revenge for the death of their father at the hands of the Mountain. The three are known collectively as the "Sand Snakes" and include Obara Sand (Keisha Castle-Hughes), Tyene Sand (Rosabell Laurenti Sellers), and Nym Sand (Jessica Henwick).
