Ga. Church Bans 103-Year-Old Woman Over Disagreement with Reverend
A 103-year-old woman in Elberton, Georgia is protesting the recent decision of her Baptist church to ban her from attending services after a decades-long membership.
Genora Hamm Biggs has said that she was banned from attending Union Grove Baptist Church in Elberton, Georgia after she and other church members were involved in a disagreement with new pastor Rev. Tim Mattox.
A letter sent to Biggs from the church said that the woman is not to visit the church "for any reason whatsoever."
"This letter is to inform you that according to the by-laws of the Union Grove Baptist Church, and by vote of the active members, any membership or associations that you have had with this church are now officially revoked. Therefore, you cannot attend Union Grove Baptist Church for any reason whatsoever. You are not to come to the property of the Union Grove Baptist Church located at 680 Pulliam Street, Elberton, Georgia, 30635," the letter added, as reported by The Christian Post.
Biggs told the New York Daily News that she was "shocked" by the letter, as she has been attending the church since she was 11-years-old.
"I was shocked," Biggs said. "I wasn't expecting it. I'm not happy they're trying to put me out at that age."
"I've been going since I was 11 years old," she added.
Biggs added to the Daily News that she believes the letter was sent as a result of a disagreement between her and the reverend, as she has criticized Mattox for not preaching in line with the rules of the Baptist church.
