'Fuller House' season 3 news: Spinoff sitcom renewed

Fresh from its successful sophomore run, "Fuller House" has been recently renewed for a supersized third season expected to air next year.

News about the show's renewal broke right in time for the Christmas holiday, with the official "Fuller House" social media handles, announcing the new installment with a short video clip.

Series creator Jeff Franklin also shared the news through his personal Instagram account, telling fans that he will be back to work this week to start work on the third season. Additionally, he revealed that season 3 will have 18 episodes â€” up from the 13 episodes from each of the first two seasons. "Happy New Year! Looking forward to season 3 -- 18 episodes -- Back to work on Monday!" the caption reads.

While Netflix is known for not releasing ratings to the public, it was previously reported that "Fuller House" season 1 was a huge hit among fans. A rating company called Advanced Symphony Media even dubbed it as the most-watched TV series of 2016, easily outranking other fan favorite programs including AMC's long-running zombie drama "The Walking Dead" and Fox's hip-hop musical "Empire."

As noted by Forbes, adding five more episodes to the usual season order is good news for Franklin because he previously said that adjusting to a 13-episode season took some getting used to. The series creator told the publication back in December that "Full House" seasons were usually around 22 to 26 episodes, so they hope Netflix would stretch the episode order for the spinoff series.

"We've had two seasons on in the same calendar year, but we've only done 26 episodes. That would really only be the first season in the old days," he explained. "I feel like we're just getting started. We're sort of just scratching the surface of what the series will ultimately be. Hopefully we'll be around for a lot of episodes," he went on to say.

Netflix has yet to announce a premiere date for "Fuller House" season 3.
