The FBI has identified the gunman responsible for the Thursday attack in Chattanooga, Tennessee that left four marines and the suspect dead.

The shooting took place at around 10:45 a.m. when 24-year-old suspect Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez opened fire on the Army Recruiting Center from his vehicle, before driving to the Naval and Marine Reserve Center and engaging officers in a shootout that reportedly lasted nearly 20 minutes.

Adbulazeez was eventually killed by officials during the shootout, along with four marines who were members of a specialized-artillery reserve unit.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam said in a statement that "lives have been lost from some faithful people who have been serving our country, and I think I join all Tennesseans in being both sickened and saddened by this."

President Barack Obama also issued a statement calling the incident "a heartbreaking circumstance for these individuals who served our country with great valor to be killed in this fashion."

28-year-old Greg Raymond, who attended a Chattanooga high school with the suspect, said he remembers Abdulazeez as being very creative in their film class.

" I remember him being very creative. He was a very light minded kind of individual. All his videos were always very unique and entertaining," Raymond told Reuters.

"He was a really calm, smart and cool person who joked around. Like me he wasn't very popular so we always kind of got along. He seemed like a really normal guy," Raymond added.
