The upcoming movie "Exodus: Gods and Kings" has whipped up a storm following recent comments made by its leading man, Christian Bale, who plays the part of Moses.

The movie is set for release in December this year.

The film is based on the Biblical story of the exodus of Jews from Egypt. However, insiders say "Exodus: Gods and Kings" will be a secular retelling of the Biblical story and will not be reverential in the least bit.

Hollywood Reporter says the movie could be along the same lines as the film "Noah" starring Russell Crowe. According to many, that film focused more on an "environmental theme" rather than the moral theme of God punishing man for sinning.

During a recent press conference at a hotel in Los Angeles, Bale described Moses as "barbaric" and "schizophrenic."

"I think the man was likely schizophrenic. He is one of the most barbaric individuals I've ever read about," the Batman actor said.

Before taking on the role of Moses in "Exodus: Gods and Kings," Bale admitted that he had little knowledge about who Moses really was. To find out more about him, Bale said he read the Bible, Torah, Koran and the book "Moses: A Life" written by Jonathan Kirsch.

Bale said as a result of his research he found out that "Moses was a complex character as complex as his creator."

He described Moses as "a very troubled, tumultuous man and mercurial."

Chris Stone, who represents Faith Driven Consumer, told The Hollywood Reporter that he was surprised by Bale's comments and that there was nothing in the Bible to support Bale's allegations. "There will be a tremendous disconnect between Bale's interpretation of Moses and the expectations of the market," Stone said.
