'Empire' season 3 spoilers: 'The Cosby Show' star Phylicia Rashad lands recurring role; Will she be an enemy of Lyon family?

\"Empire\" season 3 airs Sept. 21 9 p.m. ET on Fox Network. | FOX Network

Three weeks before "Empire" officially returns to the small screen, veteran actress Phylicia Rashad joins the cast of Fox's hit musical drama for its much-anticipated third season.

"The Cosby Show" star landed a recurring role as Diana Dubois, the matriarch of one of New York's most prominent African-American families. She portrays the mother of another new character Angelo Dubois (Taye Diggs), a young and ambitious city councilman who crosses paths with the Lyon clan. Unlike his mother, Angelo is not interested in earning millions of dollars while working in the private sector. Instead, his objective is to join local politics and make a difference by taking part in community organizing. There are speculations that he will become Cookie's (Taraji P. Henson) new love interest after she decides to move on from her ex-husband.

Diana's main goal is to prepare her son to run for higher office and she will do anything in her power to groom him. As she meets Lucious (Terrence Howard), Cookie and the rest of the Lyon family members, viewers will have a deeper look into the class divide that exists even within the black community.

Rashad will join a long list of other guest stars for season 3 including latest additions Birdman, French Montana and Sierra McClain. Pop diva Mariah Carey will also make an appearance as Kitty, a performer who collaborates with Jamal (Jussie Smollett) for a son. A sneak peak has already been released featuring the first look at Carey's character. "You've always got a trick up your sleeve," Kitty tells Cookie in the teaser. Carey's episode on "Empire" airs on Oct. 5.

Based on the premiere episode synopsis, the story picks up right after the events of the season 2 finale. Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray) deals with being left in the altar while Lucious pursues his musical legacy by launching his streaming service. Viewers will also see who falls off the building during Rhonda (Kaitlin Doubleday) and Anika's (Grace Gealey) huge fight.

"Empire" season 3 premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. EST on Fox.
