'Empire' season 3 spoilers, plot news: Cookie persuades Jamal to perform again; Mariah Carey to appear as mega-superstar Kitty in episode 3

It's not so black and white in the upcoming episode of Fox's hit musical drama "Empire" season 3.

Titled "What Remains is Bestial," next week's episode will see music icon Mariah Carey make her first appearance on the show as a guest star. According to the official synopsis, Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) asks mega-superstar Kitty (guest star Carey) for a favor to record a new single with Jamal (Jussie Smollett), in her hopes that her son will finally overcome his inability to perform.

Meanwhile, Andre (Trai Byers) runs into some trouble again and things won't go as planned. Cookie and Lucious (Terrence Howard) continue to be on bad terms, while their youngest son Hakeem fight with Gram (guest star Romeo Miller) for Tiana's (Serayah) attention. Cookie seems to be ready to move on from her ex-husband as things start to heat up between her and businessman Angelo Dubois (guest star Taye Diggs).

This week's "Empire" gave a harsh dose of reality when it explored a Black Lives Matter movement-themed storyline. In the final moments of Wednesday's episode, Andre was racially profiled by two white cops. Cookie and Lucious' eldest son, who is still recovering from the death of his wife Rhonda, was arrested after police officers suspected he was burglarizing his own house.

In a recent conference call with the press, Smollett weighed in on how the series featured a very timely issue. "What we're able to do in an entertaining way is really show a conversationâ€”two very valid views on that conversation that if joined together could be more powerful," he said.

Moving forward, series writer Carlito Rodriguez hinted how Andre's recent encounter with the police will affect his future decisions. "It's all influencing and impacting his psyche, his state of mind. Again, yeah, a part of it is Andre being challenged on his idea of what being 'respectable' will get you," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

The third season of "Empire" airs every Wednesday night at 9 p.m. EST on Fox.
