The mystery-solving duo of Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) and Dr. Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) will soon be back for the fifth season of "Elementary," and more exciting cases are up ahead when the show returns in October.

Morland's portrayer John Noble will not be in season 5, and his departure might take its toll on the show's ratings. Morland's complicated relationship with his son Sherlock is one of the storylines which made the viewers glued to their screens in the previous season, and now that he is no longer a series regular, it remains to be seen how the writers will move forward with the story.

In an interview, executive producer Rob Doherty mentioned that it was their initial plan for Morland to complete his arc and leave New York City afterward. "This was always the plan that we would have John aboard for Season 4," he told TV Line. "We wanted Morland — and, by extension, John — to help us define Season 4, and he absolutely did that. I feel like we told the one long story we wanted to, but we [also] got to tell a lot of smaller stories about Sherlock and his father, and then Morland trying to develop a relationship with Joan. We feel like we did everything we set out to do." Doherty added that should Noble be interested to be back, there will always be a spot for him in the story. "We've also left the door very open to seeing John again next year," he added.

Meanwhile, spoiler reports say that Natalie Dormer might reprise her role as Moriarty. After being killed off in HBO's hit fantasy series "Game of Thrones," fans expect that she will be back in "Elementary." However, Cartermatt notes that the chances of Dormer returning for season 5 is slim, since the actress currently has a lot of upcoming projects and appearances.

Stay tuned for the season 5 premiere of "Elementary" on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 10 p.m. EST on CBS.
