'Elementary' season 5 release date, spoilers: Watson loses interest in being a detective

In the upcoming season of "Elementary," Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) will be on the brink of quitting her job as an investigator because over the summer, she slowly lost interest in her job. But Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) will be helping his colleague rekindle her passion for the field.
Executive producer Rob Doherty told Entertainment Weekly that Holmes will immediately find out how his partner is feeling about their job. Doherty revealed that although Watson likes being a detective, she misses her work as a doctor.
"Joan makes it clear that she's quite happy being a detective, but at the same time she misses helping people," Doherty told the news outlet. "It's something that she could do when she was a surgeon; it's something she could do when she was a sober companion, but, as she says in the first episode, she and Sherlock are in the punishment business," he added.
In the upcoming season, Holmes will be encouraging Watson to assist with Shinwell Johnson (Nelsan Ellis) as he transitions back into society. Johnson will soon be exiting jail. To note, the man was Watson's patient while she was still a surgeon. Though this might be what Watson needs, it will also be a rather complicated task.
"He is someone with a dark and troubled past, who is trying to reform himself, but he brings a lot of baggage to our doorstep, there may be a difference of opinion on whether keeping him in their orbit is such a good idea," Doherty revealed.
On the other hand, TV Line reported that Johnson will be helping Watson solve a case. The news outlet said that Ellis will be appearing in three episodes in season 5, including the premiere episode of the show.
The fifth season of "Elementary" will return to CBS on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 10 p.m. EDT.
