Dr. Strange Movie Cast News: Benedict Cumberbatch's Casting As 'Dr. Strange' Sets Internet Ablaze

Marvel has cast Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange, a decision welcomed by many netizens. The official announcement, which was made on Marvel's Twitter account and website on Friday, quickly set of feverish speculations on the Internet.

The excitement was intense despite the fact that Cumberbatch had long been rumored to be the leading contender for the role.

Many felt the popular British actor was perfect for the role. They noted that he has impressive acting chops and could make the character of Dr. Strange likeable, something that he has done for the character of Sherlock Holmes in the series "Sherlock," where his outstanding performance over the years has seen him nominated for a number of Golden Globe awards, Emmys and BAFTAs. He has already won several awards including an Emmy in 2014 and a Britannia Award in 2013.

Cumberbatch has also been making his presence felt in films where he has played everything from villains such as Khan Noonien Singh in "Star Trek: Into Darkness" to the genius Alan Turing in "The Imitation Game." His performance as Turing in particular has been highly acclaimed and many consider him a top contender for the Best Actor category in this year's Oscar Awards.

Marvel, in its announcement, also took note of his upcoming films including his role in "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies," where he lends his voice to the dragon Smaug and the Necromancer/Sauron.

Entertainment Weekly, commenting on Cumberbatch's perfect fit for Dr. Strange, says he can play a "different type of jerk" with ease. This will come in handy because Dr. Strange's story is filled with arrogance. Dr. Strange is a medical doctor in the Marvel universe who loses his ability to perform surgery after an accident. He then starts experimenting with magic in order to find a cure to illnesses.
