'Doctor Who' season 10 release date news: Michelle Gomez set to return, Peter Capaldi confirms filming to begin mid-June

Long-running British science fiction series "Doctor Who" is slated to return for its 10th season next year, and fans will soon see a familiar face return to the show. Actress Michelle Gomez recently confirmed during the Dallas Comic Con held last Friday that she will reprise her role as Maggie in the upcoming season.

Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman were also present in the event, and Capaldi mentioned that the show will begin filming two weeks from now. Along with Capaldi as the lead, actress Pearl Mackie has landed the role of Bill - the newest companion.The season will also mark the end of Steven Moffat's stint as the showrunner, as he previously announced that he will be replaced by Chris Chibnall. "Feels odd to be talking about leaving when I'm just starting work on the scripts for season 10, but the fact is my timey-wimey is running out," Moffat said. "While Chris is doing his last run of Broadchurch, I'll be finishing up on the best job in the universe and keeping the Tardis warm for him."

Additionally, Chibnall expressed his excitement of working on the hit BBC series and how he has been a fan since he was young."Doctor Who is the ultimate BBC programme: bold, unique, vastly entertaining, and adored all around the world," Chibnall explained. "So it's a privilege and a joy to be the next curator of this funny, scary and emotional family drama. I've loved Doctor Who since I was four years old, and I'm relishing the thought of working with the exceptional team at BBC Wales to create new characters, creatures and worlds for the Doctor to explore."

The network has yet to announce an official premiere date for "Doctor Who," but the show is expected to arrive sometime next year. Before the 10th season kicks off in 2017, a Christmas special will be aired December of this year.
