'Deadpool 2' release date, news and updates: 'John Wick' director David Leitch officially signed to direct film

The sequel to "Deadpool" was recently thought to be in a lot of trouble after the departure of the original director, Tim Miller. But the good news is that the film has officially found its new helmer in "John Wick" director David Leitch.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Miller left the project because of "creative differences" with lead actor Ryan Reynolds. Leitch has a lot of background when it comes to the action genre. Before he directed the Keanu Reeves action-revenge movie that was "John Wick," Leitch spent years as a second unit director and stunt coordinator, eventually creating his own stunt company, 87eleven.
Back when the job for director was still open, Leitch was included in a short list along with names like Rupert Sanders, Drew Goddard and Magnus Martens. Leitch was said to have met with Reynolds in New York and was then offered the job to direct "Deadpool 2."
"Deadpool" is getting known to be one of the most successful R-rated movies of all time, so Leitch has a lot of pressure on his shoulders to deliver a sequel that will make fans happy. Fox is already reportedly working on developing "Deadpool 3" which could have a director other than Leitch. The rumors say that this time around, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) will be joined by another X-team, the X-Force.
"Deadpool" follows the story of Wade Wilson, a mercenary who was diagnosed with cancer and underwent an experiment that gave him remarkable healing powers, but also deformed his body. Packed with extraordinary martial arts skills and impeccable wit, Wade Wilson transforms into Deadpool, the merc with a mouth, and the superhero that defies all superhero tropes.
"Deadpool 2" is set to release on Jan. 12, 2018.
